WHAT!? Yes. Well, actually, I wouldn’t quite put it like that, exactly. Although, this is the conclusion people jump to majority of the time. “You eat it!?” Technically, yes. I had my placenta encapsulated, and also made into a tincture.

WHY!?? After giving birth many new mothers experience blood loss, fatigue, and a drop in their high pregnancy hormones; all of which are thought of as key factors in the development of the “baby blues” and postpartum depression. The theory is that in consuming the placenta, you are replacing the hormones you lost during the birthing process. The placenta’s hormonal make-up is completely unique to the mother. No prescription, vitamin or herbal supplement can do what one placenta pill can! For thousands of years, placenta has been used to avoid postpartum symptoms such as depression, low vitality, fatigue, insufficient lactation, low birth weight and hormonal imbalance. It is composed of SO many healing chemicals! Check these out:

Gonadotrophin: the precursor to estrogen, progesterone and testosterone
Prolactin: promotes lactation
Oxytocin: for pain and bonding; produced during breastfeeding to facilitate bonding of mother and infant.
Thyroid stimulating hormone: boosts energy and helps recovery from stressful events
Cortisone: combats stress and unlocks energy stores
Interferon: stimulates the immune system to protect against infections
Prostaglandins: anti-inflammatory
Hemoglobin: replenishes iron deficiency and anemia, a common postpartum condition
Urokinase inhibiting factor and factor XIII: stops bleeding and enhances wound healing
Gammaglobulin: immune booster that helps protect against postpartum infections

Why did I do this? When I first learned about this unusual trend, of course I was disgusted. But I got over the gross-factor and did it, and I thank God every single day that I did! Sadly, I only learned in time to have this done with the birth of my third child. My first and second children are 15 months apart, and my second and third child are 18 months apart. Until this week, I will have been raising three children under three years old! You heard me! Why would I not give this a shot!? Let me tell you, my experience with this decision has been phenomenal! I cannot express how amazing the turn-out has been! I have even tested the theory that these capsules and tincture are the reason I have survived this phase in my life. I began taking the capsules immediately after my frienda certified doula in Minnesota, delivered them back to my home. I quickly realized that even with all the drama and noise and chaos with two toddlers and a newborn all by myself in my home learning how to mother three children at once, I was not overwhelmed, stressed, or nearly exhausted as I thought I would be. To this day I remain completely balanced. It has been amazing! In testing the theory that the placenta capsules are the reason for this, I skipped taking the capsules one day. I completely lost it and broke down. By the end of the day I was begging my husband to come back home from work early to relieve me for the rest of the evening. It was then that I decided that God knew exactly what he was doing when he created us. I also tested this theory with the tincture. Same results! It’s amazing! Okay, I could go on, but I think you get the picture 😉

HOW!? The placenta can be eaten raw, in capsules, or made into a tincture. Preparation includes having the placenta steamed, dehydrated and encapsulated alone or with dried herbs, and/or infusing a small chunk of the placenta in a high grade alcohol to create a tincture.

How do I consume this? Of course capsules are taken alone followed by water. I usually take a couple in the morning, and I remain completely balanced for the entire day! As for the tincture, I’ve read that anywhere from 10 to 40 drops in a cup of water is adequate for a day, depending on the momma. Personally, I drop about 10 or 15 drops in my tea or lemon water in the morning, and that lasts me most of the day! If I ever feel like I am beginning to fall short or lose it, I take another ‘dose’ in another glass of water. And guess what, I’ve given doses of the tincture to my girls in hot tea as well! If you add a few drops of the tincture in a cup of hot water, the alcohol will evaporate but the beneficial qualities remain. Tested this too. Works great for my girls! Hey, I put 10 drops in each of our bowls of fresh, hot oatmeal with honey and raisins the other morning. Results were the same as if I gave them the tea! Oh I could go on! See for yourself! Eat your placenta 😉
